Decarbonization: a 2021 trend in the energy market

Last year, when almost the entire world was social isolated due to the new Coronavirus pandemic, we witnessed unusual sights in several countries: fishes returning to Venice, cleaner rivers, less pollution, among other situations proving how man’s actions are harmful to nature.

Not surprisingly, concerns about climate change and environmental impacts are increasing among countries, resulting in goals and plans to reduce carbon emission.

And, obviously, this outlook reflects in the energy market and its increasing search for companies and industries that are for alternative solutions for more sustainable business models.

Therefore, decarbonization is pointed out as one of the main trends of the sector in 2021 and we can see more details below.

Decarbonization, a trend that starts today focusing on the future

One way of proving how decarbonization is an energy trend for 2021 is the fact that this will be the first year of the 2050 National Energy Plan, approved by the MME in December 2020, and of the 2030 Ten-Year Expansion Plan, approved in February 2021.

Both plans will guide energy companies´ actions and decisions, especially in subjects regarding sustainability and technology, topics that go together and benefit each other.

Not to mention that Brazil has the great privilege of having plenty natural resources, making it one of the most promising countries for alternative energies, such as wind and solar, as well as having a great biomass potential, making good use of the agrobusiness organic matter.

Here in Ecogen, Biomass and Solar Energy are part of our portfolio of sustainable solutions we offer our clients, aiming to reduce the use of fossil fuels.

Learn more about these solutions below:

Biomass

Biomass is a renewable energy source in which organic matters (animal or vegetal) are used as fuel and, through cogeneration, the burn-off vapor from these matters is used to heat boilers and environments in industries and companies.

The result is a system with reduced carbon emission and reduced production costs of thermal and electric energy.

Check out our video to learn more about biomass.

Among the most used organic matters, there is: charcoal, sugarcane bagasse, agricultural residues, animal excretions, and others.

We have installed a biomass boiler in a client from the food industry to generate steam in their plants. The result was a 55,000-tonne reduction of CO² emission and a 35% reduction of steam value.

Solar Energy

Solar energy is an alternative source of energy in Brazil for some time now. We can see final consumers using photovoltaic cells in their homes and a 200% annual growth since 2012.

The Brazilian climate conditions and technological advances, allowing greater access, clearly benefits the increase of the photovoltaic solar energy use.

For industries and companies, it is commonly used through Distributed Generation in the consumption site or in places nearby and as source of heating for water and other liquids.

To meet the demands of small consumers, we have installed a solar farm with more than 6,100 photovoltaic panels.

The result was a reduction of 2,400 tonnes of CO² emission per year and 26,750 MWh of clean energy.
